The "R"eal Ten Commandments [Mitzvot]

The Covenant Event Timeline

Exodus (Shemot) 19:1 - 34:28

  • Three (3) months after the Exodus from Egypt, the Children of Yisrael (COY) entered the Wilderness of Mt. Sinai and camped before the mount (Shemot 19:1-2)

  • Moses went up to Elohim on Mt. Sinai and YHWH told Moses what to tell the House of Yaaqob, COY, the Kingdom of Priests (Shemot 19:3-6)

  • Moses went down from Mt. Sinai and told the COY what YHWH said, and they agreed to do all that YHWH had spoken (Shemot 19:7-8)

  • Moses went back up to Mt. Sinai and told YHWH what the COY said (Shemot 19:9)

  • YHWH told Moses to sanctify the COY to be ready to come up to Mt. Sinai at the sound of the trumpet/Shofar on the 3rd day when YHWH will come down upon the mount (Shemot 19:10-15)

  • The COY came out of the camp to meet with Elohim at Mt. Sinai (Shemot 19:16-19)

  • YHWH called Moses up to the top of Mt. Sinai and told him to charge the COY not to break through to come up to YHWH (Shemot 19:20-24)

  • Moses went down from Mt. Sinai and spoke to the COY informing them of the words that Elohim spoke (Shemot 19:25 - 20:14).....You will notice that these words are typically cited as the Ten Commandments although there are technically more than ten:

  1. You shall have no other elohims before me (Shemot 20:3);

  2. You shall not make any graven images (Shemot 20:4);

  3. You shall not bow down or serve graven images (Shemot 20:5);

  4. You shall not take the name of YHWH in vain (Shemot 20:7);

  5. Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy (Shemot 20:8);

  6. Labor six days but do not work on the Sabbath Day (Shemot 20:9-10);

  7. Honor your father (Shemot 20:12);

  8. Honor your mother (Shemot 20:12);

  9. You shall not murder (Shemot 20:13);

  10. You shall not commit adultery (Shemot 20:13);

  11. You shall not steal (Shemot 20:13);

  12. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor (Shemot 20:13); and

  13. You shall not covet anything that is your neighbors (Shemot 20:14).

  • The COY saw and heard the thunderings, lightnings, Shofar and smoke and told Moses to speak with them but not to let Elohim speak with them for fear of death (Shemot 20:15-16)

  • Moses told the COY not to fear Elohim for HE has come to test them, so that they sin not and the people stood far away (Shemot 20:17-18)

  • YHWH then proceeded to give to Moses MANY laws, judgments, statutes and commandments to tell the COY (Shemot 20:19 - 24:3)....You will notice that the REAL Ten Commandments are among the commandments in these chapters of Shemot and they are as follows:

  1. Labor six days and rest on the Sabbath Day (Shemot 23:12);

  2. Make no mention of the names of other elohims (Shemot 23:13);

  3. Three times a year you shall keep a feast to YHWH (Shemot 23:14);

  4. Keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread in the month of Abib (Shemot 23:15);

  5. Keep the Feast of First Fruits (aka Feast of Weeks/Harvest; Shemot 23:16);

  6. Keep the Feast of Ingathering (aka Feast of Tabernacles/Sukkot/Booths; Shemot 23:16);

  7. All males appear before YHWH three times a year (Shemot 23:17);

  8. Do not offer the [Passover] sacrifice with leavened bread and do not let the fat of YHWH sacrifice remain until the morning (Shemot 23:18);

  9. Bring the first of the first fruits of your land into the House of YHWH [i.e., pay tithes] and do not boil a kid in it's mother's milk (i.e., only sacrifice eligible/acceptable animals; See Leviticus (Wayikra) 22:17-27; Shemot 23:19); and

  10. Do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the Land of Canaan or their Canaanite deities (Shemot 23:20-33).

  • YHWH told Moses to come up to HIM with Aaron, Nadab, Abihu and 70 elders to worship but only he could come near (Shemot 24:1-2)
  • Moses told the words of YHWH to the COY and all agreed to do them (Shemot 24:3)
  • Moses wrote down all the words of YHWH, sacrificed to HIM, read the Book of the Covenant to the COY and sprinkled the blood of the covenant on the COY (Shemot 24:4-8)
  • Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu and the 70 elders went up and saw Elohim (Shemot 24:9-11)
  • YHWH told Moses to come up to the top of the mount so HE could give him tables of stone, the TORAH and the commandments that HE wrote for him (i.e., Moses) to teach the COY (Shemot 24:12)
  • Moses ascended to the top of Mt. Sinai and was with YHWH for 40 days and 40 nights (Shemot 24:13-18)
  • YHWH taught Moses on Mt. Sinai about sacrificing and the building of the tabernacle (Shemot 25:1-31:17)
  • YHWH inscribed on the 1st Tables of Stone and gave them to Moses (Shemot 31:18)
  • Aaron and COY committed idolatry with the golden calf and so Moses destroyed the 1st Tables of Stone, 3,000 COY were plagued (i.e., died) and the COY were stripped of their ornaments as a result of this sin of idolatry (Shemot 32:1 - 33:6)
  • Moses took the Tent of Meeting and pitched it outside the camp and YHWH would speak with him in a pillar of a cloud, even face to face (Shemot 33:7-12)
  • YHWH told Moses to come back up to the top of Mt. Sinai to get the 2nd Tables of Stone and HE will inscribe on them [the following] commandments like HE did unto the first tables (Shemot 34:1-11)...These are the REAL Ten Commandments

  1. Do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the Land of Canaan for you must not worship any other elohim (Shemot 34:12-16);
  2. Do not make any molten elohims for yourselves (Shemot 34:17);
  3. Observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread and eat unleavened bread in the month of Abib (Shemot 34:18);
  4. Give to, and redeem from, YHWH all of your firstborn males (i.e., of man and beast; Shemot 34:19-20);
  5. Labor six days and rest on the Sabbath Day (Shemot 34:21);
  6. Observe the Feast of Weeks (aka Feast of First Fruits/Shavuot/Harvest; Shemot 34:22);
  7. Observe the Feast of Ingathering (aka Feast of Tabernacles/Sukkot/Booths; Shemot 34:22);
  8. All males to appear before YHWH three times a year (Shemot 34:23-24);
  9. Do not offer the [Passover] sacrifice with anything leavened and do not leave it remaining until morning (Shemot 34:25); and
  10. Bring the choice first fruits to the House of YHWH (i.e., pay tithes) and do not boil a kid in it's mother's milk (i.e., sacrifice only eligible/acceptable animals; See Leviticus (Wayikra) 22:17-27; Shemot 34:26).

  • Moses was on Mt. Sinai with YHWH for another 40 days and 40 nights and YHWH wrote down on the 2nd Tables of Stone these terms of the covenant, the Ten Commandments (Shemot 34:28).

  • YHWH told Moses to write down these [aforementioned] commandments for in accordance with these commandments YHWH has made a Covenant with the COY (Shemot 34:28)*

*Note: The commandments listed in Deuteronomy (Debarim) 5:6-18 are NOT the "Ten Commandments" as during that time, Moses was recanting the events that occurred during the Wilderness at Mt. Sinai and teaching the COY as YHWH had commanded him.

"I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways, I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word" (Psalms 119:15-16).
